Watauga High School, meet Mary Kent Whitaker. The high school English teacher is the 2010-2011 Watauga County Schools Teacher of the Year. Whitaker was selected from a list of nine school-wide Teachers of the Year in the Watauga County School System. The other eight school-wide Teachers of the Year for 2010-11 are Anne Sukow of Bethel, Debra Gandy of Blowing Rock, Anne Donadio of Cove Creek, Kathy Newton of Green Valley, David Knight of Hardin Park, Jeanie Ward-Hicks of Mabel, Temple Jones of Parkway, and David Shack of Valle Crucis. Whitaker now takes the Teacher of the Year reigns from the 2009-2010 winner, Dacia Trethewey, who teaches art at Parkway, Cove Creek, and Bethel. Whitaker was the meaning of humble when she accepted the award saying that it was because of the students that she won it and that she cared and loved them. She was in tears when she accepted the award, and couldn't have been more surprised. Whitaker has taught for six years at Watauga High School and 34 years overall. The Appalachian State University alumna completed her bachelor's degree and a master's degree at ASU and has also achieved National Board Certification, the highest professional credential available in the teaching profession. To determine the teacher of the year, the selection committee goes through a rigorous set of items including classroom observations, a written statement from each teacher about their teaching philosophy, and an interview. For winning the award, Watauga County Schools will give Mary Whitaker a $350 bonus. Congrats Ms. Whitaker!
