Watauga County Schools officially has a new Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012. On Friday, third-grade teacher Darcy Grimes of Bethel Elementary was selected for the honor from among the nine school-wide Teachers of the Year in the Watauga County Schools. She will succeed current Teacher of the Year Mary Kent Whitaker, an English teacher at Watauga High School. Grimes was presented with the award in a surprise visit to her classroom by Superintendent Dr. Marty Hemric, Board of Education Chair Deborah Miller and members of the Board of Education, her parents and husband, and several school system personnel. Grimes said she really didn't expect the honor, but that she loves teaching and its an honor to teach in Watauga County. Grimes is an Appalachian State graduate. She began her teaching career at Moravian Falls Elementary in Wilkes County, where she served for three years before coming to Bethel in August of 2009. The process for selecting the Watauga County Schools Teacher of the Year includes five unannounced classroom observations, a review of a written statement of teaching philosophy from each candidate, and an interview. The selection committee includes representation from teachers, principals, the Board of Education, and the Watauga County Schools central office. Each school's Teacher of the Year receives $350 from the Watauga County Schools in recognition of their award.
