Sugar Cup Competition on March 7th

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Sugar Mountain's Annual Sugar Cup Competition is just around the corner. Since 1987, Sugar Mountain Resort has held this fundraising event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. Sunday, March 7 Sugar Mountain Resort is hosting the Dick Trundy Sugar Cup Competition. Dick Trundy was a former Director of Operations for Sugar Mountain Resort from 1987 until 2000. He passed away in 2002 of cancer, so this is a tribute to Dick and also a great opportunity to support the American Cancer Society. If you come and participate in the competition, you pay an entry fee of $15 and that money goes directly to the American Cancer Society. Registration begins March 7 at 7:30 a.m. and the competition begins at 9:00 on the Big Red Slope.

Firearms Now Allowed on Blue Ridge Parkway

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

High Country residents who carry firearms will now be able to carry them on the Blue Ridge Parkway. According to several local and national reports, visitors to all federally funded parks must follow the guidelines for that individual state in regard to carrying a firearm. Parkway officials said it is up to residents to know firearm-carrying laws in each state. As long as residents have proper permits, they can carry guns, open or concealed, on the roadway and trails on the stretch of the parkway in North Carolina. Firearms are not allowed in visitors' centers because they are not allowed in federal buildings. Hunting is also still prohibited along the parkway.

Call to See if Grandfather Mountain is Open

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
With the latest winter weather blast the High Country has experienced, road and walkway conditions at Grandfather Mountain vary from day-to-day, so Grandfather officials will make a daily decision if they will open the attraction. According to Grandfather Mountain's public relations' director, Landis Wofford, the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation will make the call of whether to open or close the Mile High Swinging Bridge and the Wildlife Habitats. Wofford explained residents looking to visit Grandfather should call the entrance gate at (828) 733-4337 to find out if the attraction is open.
