Watauga Deputies End Standoff on 421
Thanks to the hard work and training, officers with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office were able to put a quick and quiet end to a standoff situation yesterday. According to Captain Kelly Redmon, officers were dispatched to as residence located at 10265 US Highway 421 North just outside of Boone yesterday afternoon to check on the welfare of the resident. Upon arrival, officers knocked on the door of the residence to find the subject standing in the doorway with a weapon. Officers backed off and called for back up and was then able to communicate with the suspect through the telephone. A swat team was also called in to assess the situation but thanks to training from the new Crisis Intervention Program, officers were able to take the suspect into custody without an altercation. Captain Redmon went on to praise how officers handled the situation with no injuries or altercations and highlighted the training they are receiving through the new Crisis Intervention Program which is a 40 hour program to help officers deal with situations such as this. After being apprehended, the subject was then transported to Watauga Medical Center for mental evaluation.
