Avery Lady Vikings Soccer Defeat Ashe

The Avery Lady Vikings and the Ashe County Lady Huskies soccer teams squared off in Newland on Wednesday night.  It was a match-up between two of the perennial soccer powers in our region.  The match opened with Avery on the offensive throughout the opening 25 minutes.  The excellent speed of the Avery players threatened the Husky goal several times, barely missing the net on four occasions.  Finally the Lady Vikings broke through at the 25 minute mark, as midfielder Shannon Smith took a shot on goal that was deflected, and striker Kylie Polsgrove pounced on the deflection to strike the ball past the Ashe goalkeeper into the right corner of the net for a 1 to 0 Avery lead.  This goal energized the Ashe players, as they fought hard to equalize during the remaining fifteen minutes of the first half, but the Viking players held on defensively to go into the halftime locker room with a one goal advantage.  In the second half the match completely changed as while the first half was all Vikings, the second half was all Huskies.  The Ashe players controlled the ball and kept the Viking girls pinned back in their own end throughout the entire 40 minutes, forcing the Avery players to absorb pressure and defend with everything they had for the entire second half.  An inadvertent handball was called against Avery with 20 minutes remaining, giving the Huskies a penalty kick opportunity, but Viking goalkeeper Stephanie Buchanan made a great save to deny the goal.  As the match progressed, Ashe County threw more and more players forward in an effort to get the equalizing goal.  The Huskies dominated and they came close a couple of times to scoring, but the Avery girls hustled very hard defensively and held strong for the entire second half, refusing to allow a goal, and Avery held on to win by the final score of 1 to 0.  In the end, it was a tremendous match by two excellent teams, both of whom will have a lot of success this season.  With the win, Avery keeps their record perfect as they move their season record to 2 wins and no losses.
