ASU Men's Basketball Ends Season Saturday Afternoon
Isaac Butts posted his second-straight double-double and Jamaal Trice scored 11 points off the bench but it was not enough as Appalachian State University men’s basketball was bounced by UNCG, 65-55, in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Southern Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Mountaineers took a 39-32 lead into the locker room at the half after shooting 51.7 percent against the Spartans through the first 20 minutes. After pushing its lead to as many as 11 points midway through the second half, Appalachian cooled off and allowed UNCG to reel off a 13-2 run to pull even at 51-51 with 8:16 left to play. The teams would trade leads twice over the next two and a half minutes before UNCG took the lead for good at 56-53 on a Drew Parker three-pointer with 5:25 left to play. ASU graduates four seniors in Butts, Carter, Petey Hausley and Williamson, but returns seven players from this season’s squad along with sophomore transfer Jay Canty. Southern Conference No. 1 seeded team Davidson went on to take the Conference Championship title on Sunday when they defeated Elon 83-67. It marks the first finals appearance for the Wildcats since winning the crown in 2008 in North Charleston, S.C.
