ASU Womens Basketball Goes After Championship Title
A career-high 30 points from Maryah Sydnor helped Appalachian State women’s basketball knock off Chattanooga, 77-52, to advance to a second Southern Conference championship game. The Mountaineers will face Samford today at 5 p.m. for the league title. Sydnor sank 13-of-18 shots and sank all four free-throw attempts to score the second-most points by an ASU player in a tournament game, and added 10 rebounds with a steal in 36 minutes. Appalachian opened an early lead in the game before the Lady Mocs pulled back within five points at 33-28 at the intermission. Sydnor and Anna Freeman then combined for the first six points of the second half to extend the lead to double figures. UTC never pulled any closer than eight points the rest of the way as ASU extended its advantage to as many as 27 points before the final horn sounded. Today’s championship will be broadcast on the SoCon Sports network as well as ESPN3.
