Local Election Results
Local elections were also held in yesterday's Primary and there were many races that ran neck and neck. In Avery County, the vote for Board of Education will have to rely on the canvass as Martha Hicks led the race followed by Reo Griffith and chairman Kenny Poteat, but Poteat only edged out fellow runner Scott Heath by 2%. Also in Avery, Renee Dellenger took home the victory in the Register of Deeds race with 78% of the votes while Board Of Education saw another tight race as Kathey Aldridge led with 26% followed by John Greene and Keith Tutterow who edged out John Hicks by only 2%. In Ashe County, Richard Blackburn led the Democratic race for the Board of Commissioners with 32% followed by Dan McMillan and Marty Gambill. On the Republican side, Gary Roark led the race in the Board of Commissioners followed by Larry Rhodes and Gerald Price. In Watauga County, it was a close race for the Board of Education which was led by Brenda Reese with 20% of the vote followed by Barbara Kinsey also with 20% and Ron Henries with 16%, edging out Jay Fenwick and Deborah Greene with 15% of the vote. As for the North Carolina Senate and House of Representative races, Elizabeth Motsinger took the Democratic vote for the House of Representatives in District 5 while Mark Meadows took the Republican vote for the House of Representatives in District 11 and Dan Soueck took the victory as the Republican nominee for the Senate seat in District 45.
