Newland Holds Fallen Officers Ceremony

Saturday, May 12, 2012 marked memorial services all over our nation as Fallen Officers were honored for laying down their lives in order to protect the citizens of this great country.
Newland, NC was no exception as a somber service took place on the courthouse square at 11 a.m. for the brave officers of Avery County that perished in the line of duty. Captain Reo Griffith of Sugar Mountain Police gave roll call to these officers, as friends and family members lay flowers at the monument at the call of each name. The six brave officers that were not there to answer roll call were: Zeb Winters; William Burleson; James Hardy Coffee; Alvin Jones; Max Daniels; and Glen Harold Hicks.
Sandy Stafford then sang a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace, followed by a special guard unit of the North Carolina Highway Patrol in a 21-gun salute. Closing the ceremony Taps was played by Mr. Chris Bertolin.
