5th Annual Antler Cool 5 Race Held This Past Weekend

With breath taking views from Beech Mountain, it’s easy to see why the Antler Cool 5 race weekend has become a destination for runners from all over the country. The weather was perfect as the 5th annual 5 k race began at 9 am and the last runner 89 year old Margaret Hagerty closed the race with a great time of 1 hour and 39 minutes. Afterwards race director Daniel Scagnelli and title sponser Antler Realty owner, Julia Heinlein presented medals to all the runners that placed in the top 3 of their age and gender groups. Mr. Scagnelli said that from 2008, through 2011 the Cool 5 has raised over $85,000 with help from sponsors, event participation, and individual donations. This has enabled them to build a new community playground, improve the falls trail hiking loop at Buckeye Lake Recreation Area, and also will soon help to complete an ADA accessible community fishing docks program at Lake Coffee the construction of a new dock at Lake Coffey. We at MTN 18 would like to congratulate all the runners that tackled this difficult race and also all the great folks from the Town of Beech Mountain on the huge success of this annual event.
