Healthier Lunch Menu Coming To Wilkes County Schools


As students all across the high country prepare to start school this week, students in Wilkes County can expect a healthier menu in the cafeteria. Wilkes school cafeteria food is meeting new federal nutrition standards designed to ensure meals are healthy and well-balanced. Additional standards that are being met in the lunchroom include age-appropriate calorie limits. larger servings of vegetables and fruits. Students must take at least one serving of produce, a wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables, fat-free or 1 percent milk, more whole grains and less sodium. Students can purchase a quick, healthy school breakfast for $1 and lunch for $1.85 in elementary schools or $2.10 in middle and high schools.
