The Lees-McRae Bobcat women closed out the regular season in fine style Thursday night, as Lauren Casey scored a career high 29 points to lead the Lady Bobcats to an 89-76 comeback win over Converse at Williams Gym. Casey's 23 made up a good portion of the Lady Bobcats 61 second half points in the come from behind win. Converse led the entire first half and took 34-21 lead into the intermission. After the break Casey sparked the Lady Bobcats' comeback with eight points and a steal that resulted in a 10-2 run to tie the game at 38 with 17:36 remaining in the clock. Converse continued to keep things out of reach but the Lady Bobcats orchestrated a 10-0 run with 12 minutes to go, and cut the lead to just one, 51-50. Courtney Furr canned a three to tie the game at 63 with less than five minutes remaining. The two teams traded the lead five times and had two ties over the next two minutes before Casey was fouled shooting a three sending her to the charity stripe. Casey made all three free throw attempts to give the Lady Bobcats a 70-68 lead with 2:41 left to play. Over the next couple of minutes, The Lady Bobcats forced a turnover and scored, stole an inbounds pass and scored, and hit 12 of 16 free throws down the stretch. LMC went 45 percent from the field and 54 percent from three in the second half, and 37 points off of 39 Converse turnovers for the game.
Both Bobcat teams now enter into the Conference Carolinas tournament, with the Lady Bobcats traveling to Limestone Sunday night for a 7pm tip. The Bobcat Men are at Coker for first round action on Saturday.

Donald Sims stands six feet one inch tall, but Thursday night at the Holmes Center, he was a giant, scoring a career high 35 points and hitting 9 three pointers, to lead the Mountaineers to a critical win over North Division leader Chattanooga, 88-82. Two of those three pointers came in the final minute of the game to seal the win. The Mountaineers led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but the Mocs went on a 34-19 run to take its first lead in 26 minutes at 76-75 with 4:09 to go. The Apps regained the lead 17 seconds later on a Sims three but UTC scored six of the next 10 points to knot it at 82-82 and set up Sims' last-minute heroics. Sims broke the tie with a long-range three-pointer with 57 seconds left to play. After the Mocs' Stephen McDowell missed a game-tying three and following an ASU timeout, Sims drained his ninth three-pointer of the evening from 25 feet with 14 seconds remaining to get the win. Isaac Butts had four points and three rebounds in the first three minutes of the game but spent the next 17 minutes on the bench due to foul trouble. The big man came back with 13 minutes to go in the second half and took off, finishing with his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in just 16 minutes of play. Kellen Brand added 18 points and a season-best seven assists on 8-of-14 shooting with four rebounds. Donterious Hughes dished out five assists of his own to go along with 13 points and a perfect 5-for-5 mark from the charity stripe. The Apps made 15-of-20 from the line in the game and 21 assists in the game, the second-highest total of the season. The Apps improve to 12-16 overall, 9-10 in the SoCon, and more importantly, stay in the hunt for one of the North Division's two first-round byes in the tournament next week. A win on Saturday over Samford and a Western Carolina loss to Chattanooga, gives ASU the first-round bye, and that is very important, because no team without a bye has won the SoCon Tournament since it went to a four-day format back in 1993. Saturday is the final games of the regular season for both Mountaineer basketball teams, and the double header will begin with the Mountaineer women hosting Georgia Southern, tip off is at 1pm, then the Mountaineer men will take the floor against Samford, with tip off at 330pm.

After playing five of its last six games on the road, Mountaineer men's basketball returns home to host the final two games of the regular season against division rivals. The first of those two is Thursday night against Chattanooga, who are alone atop the North Division Standings, and can clinch sole possesion of the division title with one win in their final two games. The Mountaineers want to keep that from happening at the Holmes Center, not just on principle, but because the Apps could finish as high as a tie for second place in the division if they win against Nooga Thursday and Samford on Saturday. In the last meeting between the two, Kellen Brand led ASU with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting while Josh Hunter grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with eight points. But it was not enough as they fell 78-74 to the Mocs January 15th. Appalachian has won three of the last five meetings and are 15-10 against em in Boone.
